The Altai Event

March 13, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Altai Republic spans the northernmost piece of the “four corners” – a mountain range that is split between Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan. We are pleased to welcome Dinara Matina, who will speak on the history and culture of the people of Altai. Dinara was born and raised in Gorno-Altaisk, the capital of the Altai Republic, and graduated from the Plakas Gymnasium for talented Altain national students. After graduating, Dinara entered Omsk State Technical University where she studied Tourism and Economics. She recently won a grant to study for 1 year in America, and currently resides in West Virginia.

The Altai mountains rose to international fame in the mid-90’s upon a stunning archaeological discovery: the “Siberian Ice Maiden”, or the “Princess of Ukok”, who was found with a large number of horses and other spiritual goods, indicating that she held an important societal role in the 5th century. She was returned to the Altai Republic in 2012, where she now rests in a special mausoleum in the capital of Gorno-Altaisk.
